Island's End -

VISITING KA'ENA POINT . . .

In ancient Hawaii, Oahu's Ka'ena Point was the island's revered jumping-off place for souls headed toward the afterlife.

Today, Ka'ena Point is revered as one of the last, few places on the main Hawaiian islands where endangered seabirds come to roost and breed.

Ironic is hardly the word to describe how Oahu, Hawaii's most urban island, is now home to one of the most productive rookeries in all the state – a status that usually requires acres of unmolested wilderness.

Keeping Ka'ena Point unmolested is, sometimes, a difficult task, as only recently several young people were sentenced in court for the devastation of albatross nests and resting grounds.

And yet the Point remains a popular hiking destination as one of Oahu's few wilderness experiences not requiring mountaineering skills to visit.

Come along and see for yourself.
