WORLDWIDE SAIL VOYAGES TO POKA'I BAY . . .

In 1975 America, many folks were celebrating a culture of bloated consumer goods – automobiles grown to elephantine proportions, and pants-leg cuffs ballooning to the size of miniskirts – while here in Hawaii an expansive idea christened a voyage of a modestly-sized sailing craft in order to reassemble a culture. The Hokulea, a Polynesian voyaging canoe replica, was launched from Oahu's shores to navigate its way to Tahiti, utilizing traditional wayfaring methods not seen in Pacific waters for many hundreds of years.
More contemporaneously, the Hokulea, recently back from a multiyear, round-the-world voyage, was brought ashore atop the sands of Poka'i Bay in Waianae, to celebrate that voyage, and to share its mission with Waianae Coast residents.
