WAVE EDUCATION FOR VISITORS . . .

Translated into English, the name “Makaha” can mean fierce.

Thought to be an opinion regarding the area's original residents, it's also an appropriate meaning for the wave action of Makaha Beach. (Just ask New Yorker writer William Finnegan, whose book: Barbarian Days – A Surfing Life, depicts an almost-fatal ending in its waters, after several decades of active surfing adventures.)

As a former body-surfing Southern Californian, for me it was quickly evident that the beaches of Hawaii are no playground for the uninformed or unfamiliar who tempt their shores.

Just ask second-generation Makaha waterman Brian Keaulana.
